Summary

The primary purpose of the Health & Safety Specialist is to assist the Health & Safety Department in daily implementation and activities related to preventing injuries and illnesses.  The Health & Safety Specialist plays a key role in maintaining Job Safety Analysis’ (JSA), physical demands, and helps drive a “Safety Always” culture. The Health & Safety Specialist position requires attention to detail, ability to understand and interpret compliance requirements, and must be able to work with all levels of employees, maintaining integrity in all aspects of their duties.

 

The Health & Health & Safety Specialist will report to the plant Safety Manager.

Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Guide the implementation of safe work practices and drive injury prevention efforts.
  • Conduct health and safety training on various topics such as New Hire Safety Orientation, Lockout Tagout, Emergency Preparedness, Accident Investigation and Machine Guarding.    
  • Core experience: Lockout Tagout, Forklift Safety, Machine Guarding, Confined Space, Cranes and Hoists, Electrical, Mobile Equipment, Accident Investigation, and Ergonomics.
  • Develop and implement safety and health procedures and ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal health and safety rules and regulations and McWane Health & Safety procedures.
  • Perform health and safety inspections and audits at prescribed frequencies and as determined by the Safety Manager.     
  • Participate in and lead risk assessments for new or existing machinery or equipment and recommendations for improvements.
  • Perform ergonomic risk assessments.
  • Provide daily health and safety support to Operations Departments.
  • Assists with performing incident investigations, root cause analysis and provide mentorship to supervision and management.
  • Contractor Safety program implementation
  • Actively involved in the industrial hygiene program - air sampling and noise monitoring
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) Program
  • Participates in or conducts safety meetings as requested for departments and committees.
  • Looks for opportunities to get employees involved in safety, environmental, process changes and overall improvement efforts.
  • Assists with crafting lockout tagout and confined space entry procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of current OSHA regulations and determine facility compliance to those regulations.
  • Assist with maintaining safety files and records, both paper and electronically.
  • Assist in maintaining the contractor approval safety program (ISN)
  • Assist with maintaining a library of JSA’s, with new and/or revisions of existing JSAs.

Education and/or Experience:                               

Bachelor's degree from four-year College or university in Occupational Safety or a related field preferred; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Language Skills                               

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. 

 

Mathematical Skills                                                 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability                                                    

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to read and interpret State, Federal, and local laws as it pertains to safety and plant operations.

 

Digital Literacy                                           

To perform this job optimally, an individual should be proficient in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.  Training will be provided in the use of internal systems.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations   None

No requirements for this role. CSP Certification or willingness to get certified as a CSP is preferred.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wide range of temperatures, humid conditions, moving machinery, dust, fumes, gases, odors, vibrations, and varying noise levels.

 

There is a high noise level throughout the plant and hearing protection must always be worn while in the plant during production.  Wearing other proper protective equipment including metatarsal safety shoes and eye protection is always required while in the plant during production.
